Tahiti : a special place where you can always find a wave to surf.

There are two seasons in Tahiti for surfing : the austral summer (October to April) and the austral winter (April to October). But also two seasons to change its own surfing approach : coral reef or beach breaks.
Most of people in the world know the winter season because it’s the perfect moment where Teahupo’o decides to wake up. Moment where south and south westerly swells come from South Pacific. All spots located in the west coast of Tahiti are exposed by s or sw swells and most of them are coral reef breaks , exempted Taharu Beach at Papara. So, spots like Teahupo’o, Taapuna or Sapinus can deliver their most beautiful wild barrels ! Without significant tidal effect and a low depth water, waves are very powerful and hollow. A huge commitment becomes the key to get the most beautiful day of your life.
But, resume Tahiti surfing to Teahupo’o is the tree that hides the forest. All waves do not break on reef, some jewels break on black sand…

And treasures lie during the summer season , the north and east coasts are exposed to north and north westerly swells come from North Pacific. When the North Shore at O’ahu is on fire; 3 days after, North Shore of Tahiti is on fire too ! Black sand spots like Orofara, Ahonu, Papenoo Bay and the magnificent Papenoo Rivermouth can offer all kinds of surfing experience.
The most radical spot is Papenoo Rivermouth. This wave is the polynesian cousin of La Graviere : one goal: to rush into the biggest barrel possible before the wave explodes on the sand and pebbles ! But rest of north beach breaks are more accessible besides the high attendance of surf schools is a sign that does not deceive. But when the swell is on rendez vous, all those beach breaks deliver some big barrels ; the key is to find the best place …
Also, North Coast is the perfect place to find all kind of wave : beach breaks, secret reef breaks and high ledge called Maoti !

In a period of seasonal transition, it is therefore possible to be able to surf all around the island and sometimes alone because the swells are present on both sides and the swell of wind generated by the trade winds can also reserve surprises in improbable places; the surfer to listen to his island and the elements that make it up…
