Despite the existence of a few spots that can really deliver, big-wave surfing in Brittany receives very little media coverage. For Ronan Chatain, it is a double-edged sword: “I’m a bit torn, because I think there are certain sessions that deserve the spotlight and can help legitimize Brittany as a genuine surfing destination. But at the same time, I think it’s a luxury these days to be able to surf solid, high-quality waves without a crowd in the water. I’d lean towards saying it’s good for it to stay somewhat under the radar. It’s tricky to hold such a contradictory view, but after surfing one of the season’s first swells at Guéthary, I was simply appalled by the crowds—and, consequently, by how dangerous the spot became given the number of people out there. It’s becoming a real problem.”
