Riding Giants

Surf Action

Imagine waves reaching dizzying heights, daring surfers defying the laws of nature, and a small Portuguese town transformed into a global surfing arena. Welcome to Nazaré, the place where it all comes to life. The giant wave season runs from early November 2024 through March 2025, offering a magnificent natural spectacle. During this time, this gem of Central Portugal becomes the stage for an unparalleled natural display and the epicenter of the surfing world. As soon as conditions are optimal, the best big-wave surfers will spring into action to compete in the prestigious Tudor Big Wave Challenge. Prepare to be dazzled by the power and majesty of Nazaré’s colossal waves.

The Nazaré Canyon is a unique underwater formation located off the Atlantic coast. With an abyssal depth of 5,000 meters and a span of approximately 230 kilometers, this canyon is the catalyst for the giant waves that have made Nazaré famous in the surfing world.

The town of Nazaré, nestled in Central Portugal, owes much of its renown to this natural phenomenon. The canyon creates ideal conditions for the formation of gigantic waves, making Nazaré a pilgrimage site for surfers and thrill-seekers alike.

It is worth noting that Nazaré is not defined solely by giant waves. While Praia do Norte has captured international attention, it is just one of the region’s many surf spots. Nazaré also offers more accessible waves suitable for all skill levels.

The giant wave season in Nazaré runs from September to April, though there are typically two or three periods each year when the waves transform into true behemoths. Since 2011, the Tudor Big Wave Challenge, held at the famous Praia do Norte, has propelled Nazaré onto the international surfing stage. However, these waves are not for the faint-hearted; they attract the world’s bravest and most experienced surfers.

Garrett McNamara is one of the most famous names associated with Nazaré. The Hawaiian surfer achieved the feat of riding a 23.77-meter wave at Praia do Norte on November 1, 2011. This record-breaking moment was captured by Portuguese photographer António Manuel Silva and made headlines around the globe.

German surfer Sebastian Steudtner took the baton, riding a 26.21-meter wave on October 29, 2020. These feats not only set new Guinness World Records but also cemented Nazaré’s global reputation as a premier surfing destination. Yet, one cannot forget the surfers who challenged the wave but did not return.

In February 2023, Sebastian Steudtner may have pushed the boundaries of big-wave surfing at Nazaré even further. During a spectacular session alongside Brazilian surfer Lucas Chumbo, he tackled a colossal wave that could well surpass his previous world record of 26.21 meters. Preliminary analysis of drone footage suggests the wave reached a height of 28.57 meters—a staggering figure that has ignited excitement across the surfing community and the media. However, official ratification by Guinness World Records—and even determining who actually rode the biggest wave (as both Steudtner and Chumbo lay claim to it)—could take months, or even up to two years. In the meantime, footage of the feat continues to captivate the world and fuel ongoing debate. The 2025 big-wave season has concluded without a record-breaking ride, yet it delivered moments of bravery that will long be remembered. The legendary Nazaré break once again captivated the world, featuring spectacular swells, extreme performances, and the suspense of waiting for the right weather conditions.

The Tudor Nazaré Big Wave Challenge did take place this year in solid conditions, even if the waves didn’t reach the anticipated heights (topping out at 20 meters this time around). The competition was spectacular nonetheless, marked by French dominance: victories in both the men’s and women’s categories—a rare feat highlighting the steady rise of French athletes on the international big-wave surfing stage.

Despite the lack of an official record this season, there were several memorable episodes, featuring massive wave faces, daring rescues, and dizzying aerial maneuvers. The Big Wave Challenge organizers—more demanding than ever regarding conditions—successfully waited for the perfect window to launch a high-intensity, flawlessly orchestrated event.

Now looking ahead, the big-wave surfing community is already monitoring early swell forecasts for autumn 2025. All eyes are on the future, awaiting the next historic swell at Nazaré.
