Dakhla Lassarga: a world-class wave meant to be shared.

Nestled in the heart of the Sahara and serving as the last Moroccan fishing port before Mauritania, the city of Dakhla—situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the lagoon—offers water sports enthusiasts a unique, true paradise. A favorite spot for kitesurfers since the late 1990s, following the opening of the iconic “Dakhla Attitude” camp, Dakhla has now become a prime destination for surfers seeking perfect waves and a return to the true values of surfing.

One wave and one surf camp embody this quest: the Ocean Vagabond eco-lodge, located at the Lassarga surf spot. Long kept a secret, the location is described by Moroccan surfing legend Jérôme Sahyoun, who recounts his first encounter with the wave: “As a keen fisherman during my teenage years, I often traveled to Dakhla to cast a line. One day, I decided to see what lay at the end of the road, past the sign marking the military zone, sensing that a well-kept secret awaited there. I discovered a perfect wave with no one in the water, as access was strictly prohibited at the time. I simply had to surf it, despite the soldiers’ repeated—albeit polite—refusals. Something inside told me I had found perfection, so I kept returning to the peak to catch waves, braving the reprimands of the ‘guardians of the temple.’ After that timeless session, I knew I had to share the secret with my brother Laurent. Imagine my surprise when I learned he had already been surfing it for years—solo and without telling a soul—to the point where a section of the break was already named ‘Lolo’s Point’!”

As for the quality of the wave—look no further! It never closes out, regardless of the swell size, though Jérôme Sahyoun reckons the sweet spot is between 80 cm and 1.30 m. In those conditions, the sections link up seamlessly, and a single ride can last up to a minute and a half! But make no mistake: while the wave looks easy, it is physically demanding—both because of the incredible series of turns it allows and the trek required to get back to the peak. Lassarga really puts your cardio to the test; just ask Ramzi Boukhiam, given the power he pours into his turns for over a minute straight…

Jeremy Flores, who recently visited Lassarga, sums up his experience for anyone still skeptical about this Moroccan paradise: “I had an amazing time. The locals were lovely and the hospitality was fantastic. It was perfect for a family trip: the waves were small at first, allowing the whole family to ride long waves. Then the swell picked up and the waves became magnificent, letting me pull off some great maneuvers. I’ll definitely be back!”

What more is there to say after hearing from a master like that—a two-time Pipe Masters winner? Nothing—except to dream of going there yourself…
