Waimea Bay holds a unique place in surfing history. This famous Hawaiian site is considered the birthplace of big-wave surfing.

Waimea Bay is a legendary surf spot located on Oahu’s North Shore.

It is a turbulent, dangerous place in winter, yet it offers a peaceful picture of Hawaiian ocean life in summer.

Welcome to “The Bay,” a spot renowned for its gigantic waves and death-defying sessions.

The waves break in front of Waimea Bay Beach Park, barely 300 meters west of Kamehameha Highway.

This world-famous big-wave spot comes alive during the Hawaiian winter (November to April), when long-period, deep-ocean northwest (NW) swells suddenly slam into the lava shelf located 100 meters offshore from the northern point.

A classic big-wave day at Waimea Bay usually shifts from “good” to “exceptional” at mid-tide, accompanied by light east-southeast (ESE) trade winds.

Waves exceeding 20 feet (Hawaiian scale) consistently draw dozens of swell chasers—both locals and visitors—eager to prove their skills and assert their authority at this historic site.

The Waimea Bay wave is known for testing a surfer’s control during dizzying drops (“airdrops”), as well as for its turbulent faces and massive mountains of whitewater.

If you are lucky enough to escape these crashing monsters, you still have to contend with the notorious shorebreak and its powerful, violently crashing lips.

Paddling in and out of the water is extremely tricky, and the rip currents are powerful; Surfers must therefore carefully time their movements between sets of waves to avoid getting crushed.

The shoreline layout is also treacherous, as the water depth drops rapidly from a few centimeters to over 6 meters (20 feet).

Waimea Bay is a big-wave spot that is ideal for spectators.

When the waves are up at Waimea Bay, fans and media professionals can easily watch and capture the intensity of the breaking surf from close range.

During big-wave warnings, the waves can surge over the rocks and boulders to reach the road located above.
